The Friday Fun: 1 July 2016

Halfway through the year and all things are made new. Did you break a promise, abandon a hope? Don’t worry, there’s still 6 months, half a year, 26 weeks, and just over 180 days left in which to redeem yourself. Birds chirp gladly in trees, because summer is here, and you and I walk a little lighter because we’ve made it this far into 2016 and there’s just enough of the year left to reach for the skies. Most importantly though, clock watchers, is the fact that today is Friday. So, here are a few things to help you get into it. 1.Another excellent song from Laura Mvula’s too-good-for-us album, The Dreaming Room. This one is called Kiss My Feet, and it’s the kind of song I think ought to play during a Tim Burton directed movie adaptation of the nutcracker, or perhaps at a faerie-goth wedding, or even just in your headphones as you lie quietly dreaming at night. Here’s a video of her singing it live on Jools Holland, and it’s great, but …

The Friday Fun: 3 June 2016

What is life without anticipation? A constant bob on a calm sea, so inured to ebb and flow that even a diving dolphin or a glittering rainbow seems like just another thing. We need the ups and downs, the nods and shakes, the grunts and groans of the week, if only so we can truly bask in the joy that is a weekend. What would Saturday mean without Monday? It would be just another day, after another day and we’d all be beige. So, my colour-sergeants, prepare to glow because today is Friday, and here are few things to help you get into it.   1. This not new but so pure-Friday of a Coldplay song , Adventure of a Lifetime. I don’t know what Mr ex-Gwyneth Paltrow was thinking calling that other dirge-like song with Beyonce Hymn for A Weekend . He definitely got his titles mixed up as that one is okay but this song is a praise-and-worship masterpiece for a sunny Friday afternoon, a boozy Saturday, a lazy  Sunday and all the …

The Friday Fun: 20 November 2015

I would never be so bold as to tell you what to love, but these things- a shared smile, a perfectly flipped omelette, the first restful night between newly laid bedsheets, the sated stillness after a bout of raucous laughter, the mumbled ‘hey’ from a sleep-warmed lover, the first hiss-crack of good alcohol being poured on ice cubes -are all good things, things you should like and cultivate as often as possible, but particularly when the twin terrors of weekdays and work hours abate. It’s the weekend, glow growers, and here are some other good things help you get into it. This song, Sorry, by Justin Beiber who has grown up so it’s totally okay to like his music- I checked with all the relevant authorities and you’re good, I promise. This tune is a banger and impossible to listen to without dancing. Here he is doing it live, chill-style, with the Roots. 2. This ridiculously perfect quote on commitment by Anne Morris:   The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating — in …

How To Be More Like: Adele

Firstly and foremostly, let us bow our heads and give thanks for Adele; for truly she is a gift, a true gift, unearned and ever giving, and lo we are blessed to receive her even in this hour of our  darkest need. Yea, though we forge onwards through roads littered with the rotting Azeleas of Igg and are drowned in copious Cyruses au Miley, we fear no gratuitous nudity, for Adele is with us. We are kept safe in the bosom of 19, 21 and 25, from whence our help comes and our succour flows- Hello, she comes from the other side to cleanse us and forever more refresh us, also. Amen. Secondly and aftmostly, I say unto thee that if thou, unworthy and tuneless, wish to become more like Adele, the She of Shes and Her of Hers (and of course you must wish this for who does not?) read these words of wisdom and be blessed. 1. Contour the hell out of your face. Adele’s natural cheekbones are probably pretty good, I guess, …

The Friday Fun: 7 August 2015

Too often, adult life can feel like an undeserved stream of one minor catastrophe after another. On Monday, you had an important meeting with your Executive Director, so you decided to take extra care with your make-up, only to find out too late that what you thought was a good copy of a ‘subtle everyday highlight and contour!’ youtube tutorial in fact made you look like a demented panda. And maybe on Wednesday, you had a hot date with a cute girl, so you dropped your car off at the car wash only to have it returned reeking of fried fish and old feet. Or, perhaps on Thursday, you found yourself in a puddle of helpless tears, because after spending 3  frantic weeks working to get an important business proposal to your (please God!) investor, your computer crashed taking with it all the facts and figures you need. Your mother lied to you when she said that hard work always pays off – what she ought to have said instead was that hard work sucks, …

The Friday Fun: 24 July 2015

Has it been a long week? Have you felt as if time was moving slower than a mudslide, taunting you with day after day of memos and meetings? Have you found yourself feeling just as tired upon waking as you did upon going to bed? Have you felt yourself spread too thin to take any real pleasure in existing, like too little butter on too much bread? If you’ve experienced, or are currently experiencing, any of the above, what you need is a solid, uncompromising weekend. Lucky for you, road-travellers, the weekend is waiting to comfort and restore you. Here are a few things to help you get into it. 1. This oldie but goodie from Feist- My Moon, My Man- because it’s just perfect, isn’t it? 2. This Abuja-set love story from our own files this week, Bamboo, to push whoever needs it to follow not just their hearts, but their heads too. I recall standing on a balcony with him, shivering on a sleety November evening, laughing at the way my boyfriend and …

The Friday Fun: 10 July 2015

Tomorrow, you get to be as rude as you like to your shrill alarm clock, because Saturday mornings are for lie-ins. Tomorrow, you get to forgo sensible clothes, and schlep around in those ratty trackpants you should really throw away, alternatively, finally have a reason to wear that dress that makes no real sense but was too pretty not to buy. Tomorrow, you get to forget the name of your boss, the password for your work computer, the 384 niggly little things on your To-Do List that never seem to get done. Tomorrow, you get to do whatever the hell you want to do, and then you get to do it all again, if you like, the day after. Because, dream weavers, tomorrow is Saturday, which comes after this beloved Friday. The weekend, therefore, has come so here are a few things to help you get into it. 1. This darkly thrilling music video- Rihanna’s Bitch Better Have My Money- to remind you that sometimes, you need to not give a f***. (Seriously, that’s it. …
