Uncommon Nonsense

The Friday Fun: 29 May 2015

If you have an amazing weekend lined up, you’re allowed to be a dick about it. You’re allowed to initiate conversations at work about weekend  plans just to you can brag about your own. You’re allowed to be excessively excited and unbearably smug. You’re allowed to let your joy shine forth like a beacon, you’re allowed to sing.  And if, for you, your weekend promises no more than a long lie-in and lots of tv, guess what? You’re allowed to be proud of that too. Because all weekends bright and beautiful, all weekends great and small, all weekends wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all!

Here’s some stuff to help you get into it.

1. This video of the stupidly perfect Lianne La Havas doing Age, to remind you that (a) music is worshipful; (b) melanin is the only beauty secret anyone needs to have and (c) everything about this woman is a summer day of loveliness. That last line – “I know I’m going to survive the December cold/with somebody to retrieve my long lost soul.” GUYS. Ugh.

2. This unbelievably moving and inspirational TED Talk by Janine Shepherd- an Olympic skier who became a pilot following a devastating accident. If you can’t watch video, read the transcript here, which in my view is even more impactful.

3. This photo of a young Wole Soyinka. Don’t even front, you’d totally let him read his poetry to you while you massaged coconut oil and shea butter into his ‘fro.

4. And this photo, to remind you of the joys of young love and biddable men.love

Finally, today’s fantastic featured image is of the Nigerian 4 x 100 relay team, winning at Barcelona 92′. Why? Because Nigeria swears in a new President today and I can only hope he’ll make us all as happy to be Nigerians as these amazing women are in this photo.
