A Bit of Pretty

The Friday Fun: 15th May 2015

The weekend looms over us, like a big friendly giant, promising frolics and frivolity, recklessness and raw joy, dalliances and delights. Here are a few things to help you get into it

1. This ridiculously fun Bieber/Skrillex/Diplo song that came out way back in February but seems to be made for the summer:

2. This great post from my favourite site ever about how Shonda has reinforced and reformed ladyhood for us. Notable excerpt:

Women of color are powerful and our opinions are just as valid as anyone else’s.

For many years, I’ve watched the decisions of women of color in Shondaland consistently affirmed, from Cristina Yang to Miranda Bailey in Grey’s, to Olivia Pope in Scandal and Annalise Keating in How to Get Away with Murder. Even though Asian women are seen as model minorities, there’s still the expectation that we do this through dedication rather than forthright leadership, and Cristina made me feel good about loudly asserting my opinions, even when the actual world I lived in failed to validate them. And watching Miranda, Callie, Annalise, and Shonda’s many other powerful women of color week after week normalized them in my eyes, so I became a lot more aware myself when I made prejudiced judgments about women like them in real life.

3. This photo  (below) of a couple who married today- the bride being the insanely gorgeous Lara Fortes and the groom being the Governor of Nigeria’s Edo State Adams Oshiomole- to remind you oshguys to go and chat up that person who seems out of your league this weekend as a true connection will always trump “appearances”.

4. This #peakputin photo, recently used in a New York Magazine article on the most startling and some would say reassuring news item on millenials and who they fancy.

“I’m going to see a man about a horse. Also, I’m on a horse. I’m a man, a man’s man, on a horse, going to see a man about a horse.”

If you’re wondering about the featured image, it’s one I found of Jennifer Hudson, in which her features are as quietly beautiful as a gently setting sun- and proved that one doesn’t have use an entire tray of ink and technical drawing implements on one’s brows to #slay.

Go forth and frolic, people.
